This is my Dress Form "Helen" that I found at a thrift store a long time ago. I wrote about her last year and the other day. Today is the day all bloggers are supposed to show their dress forms. I learned this news from Heidi at Everyday Cookies at Sweet Woodruff Acres If you hop over to Shabby Scraps you'll see everyones links I talked the thrift store guy into selling her for $10.00! She was broken and laying in the corner not for sale. She had no base. I knew I could figure out something!
I brought her home and saw this lamp in the garage I had taken from my mom years ago to re-wire and never got around to it. Helen's pole that she was sitting on fit PERFECTLY on the pole of that lamp base!
I'm a little embarrassed to show you how wrinkly and rumply my wedding gown is. You can see some of the lace is hanging. Here's the story. I was 19 when I got married. Didn't care ONE HOOT about having designer this or that. I did not pick out china, linens or anything. I just thought "I'll love whatever I get" I thought it was way too pretentious to "register" somewhere. I even wanted to be frugal and save my bridesmaids money so I picked out burgundy taffeta (hey it was 1982!) and had long skirts made....we bought the blouses right off the rack! Speaking of off the rack....I marched right into JCPenney Bridal shop and bought that dress. I could have cared less! I thought it was silly to spend loads of money on something to be worn once! I was still a bird under my mamas wings at the time and I let her handle all the arrangements! My Gosh how things have changed. We now have shows dedicated to Brides-to-be called Bridezilla! So after the wedding
I balled it up carefully folded it and put it in my cedar chest. I took it out every few years to see how much it didn't fit anymore! So after I found "Helen" (named after my Grandmother) (I have more to share about her on another post in the future-some interesting family discoveries lately) I pulled my wedding gown out and threw it on Helen.
I was so proud to display my JCPenney special again! I wrapped some jewelry from my husbands grandmother on her too. One day I'll shab up Helen and make her Nekid again. Speaking of Nekid...when I first got her I posted this picture on flickr....
This picture has had more hits on my flicr account than any other picture on there. I think it's more creepy people viewing it than bloggers who want one of their own. I say this because some of the profiles of people that call it a favorite are anonymous. Ewwwwwwww
One day I walked in and saw this
My husband's design idea. I threw the lampshade in the goodwill box and didn't give it another thought. Until a few days ago when I walked in and she is proudly wearing a Redskins Hat now. (not for long!)
I want to thank Gretchen at Bird Nest Cottage for teaching me how to make these pictures bigger when I load them! I'm not sure if it has worked or not but we'll see when I hit publish!
and PS....the wedding dress is "THIS CLOSE" to fitting again!
Have a terrific weekend everyone!
